2017 Events & Highlights

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25 (Pre-conference activities)

  • Civil Rights Tour to Montgomery: This guided tour to Alabama’s state capital will feature a visit to historical Dexter Ave. Baptist Church and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Buses depart from UAB Hill Student Center at 8:00am.
  • Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Tour: Join is for a tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, part of the recently declared Civil Rights National Monument. The16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park are also part of this historical district.
    • Time: Wednesday, October 25, 5:00-7:00pm
    • Location: 1510 5th Ave North (Transportation from UAB Hill Student Center provided, Buses leave at 4:30pm)
    • Cost: Included with conference registration
  • UAB BLOOM Studio and Project Space Activities, “The Language of Peace”: This interactive session focuses on the intersection of language and visual symbols. Activities take approximately 30 minutes to complete and you may come and go as you please.
    • Time: Wednesday, October 25, 10:00am – 4:00pm
    • Location: Project Space, UAB Humanities Building ground floor
    • Cost: Free and open to the public

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 (Day 1)

  • UAB BOOM Studio and Project Space Breakout Activity, “The Language of Hope”:  UAB BLOOM Studio, Project Space, and the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center free breakout activities focusing on the intersection of language and visual symbols. Activities take approximately 30 minutes to complete and you may come and go as you please.
    • Time: Thursday, October 26, 10:00am – 4:00pm
    • Location: Project Space, UAB Humanities Building ground floor
    • Cost: Free and open to the public
  • UAB Theater Musical Performance, “Savage”: Join us for this intriguing story of the tragic life of Ota Benga, a “pygmy” from the Congo region of Africa who was captured and taken to the United States and placed on display initially at the St. Louis World’s Fair and later the St. Louis and Bronx zoos. This astonishing story inspired Karla Koskinen, a professor in the Department of Theatre at UAB, to develop an original musical that would ensure Ota Benga’s story was not forgotten.
  • ​UNA-USA/PJSA United Nations Day Banquet: Luminary Riane Eisler will speak on “Building Cultures of Justice and Peace: From Domination to Partnership.” Eisler is known for her landmark best-seller The Chalice and the Blade and is an award-winning author of multiple books, scholar, journal editor, and dedicated women’s and children’s rights activist who has inspired people and organizations worldwide with her cultural transformation work that integrates the personal, political, economic, ecological, and spiritual.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27 (Day 2)

  • UAB BLOOM Studio and Project Space Breakout Activity: Create a broadside poster print. Activities take approximately 30 minutes to complete and you may come and go as you please.
    • Time: Friday, October 27, 12:00pm – 3:00pm
    • Location: UAB Humanities Building ground floor
    • Cost: Free and open to the public
  • Ashley Jones Poetry Reading and BLOOM Studios Exhibit Opening: Join BLOOM Studios and award-winning poet Ashley Jones, for readings from her new book, “Magic City Gospel.” Student illustrations will also be on display in the studio.
    • Time: 4:00pm – 6:00pm
    • Location: UAB Humanities Building ground floor
    • Cost: Free and open to the public
  • Peace Concert – “Beatles and Peace: Anthems from Across the Years”: The Beatlads, a Beatles Tribute Band from Birmingham, Alabama, will light up the night with a festive array of well-known peace songs. This fundraiser will benefit the PJSA.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 (Day 3)

  • PJSA 2017 Closing Ceremony and Awards Banquet: Join us for a celebratory evening and say farewell to friends both old and new. This year’s PJSA awards will also be presented and we will be joined by Rev. Dr. William Barber II via video.

    • Time: Saturday, October 28, 7:00pm – 9:30pm
    • Location: UAB Hill Center Ballroom
    • Cost: Included in registration for conference attendees; $45 for conference non-registrants
