Nonviolence & Humor: Carnival as a Tool of Nonviolent Resistance & Reconciliation | Dr. Janjira Sombutpoonsiri (Thammasat University)
Dr. Sombutpoonsiri discusses her thesis on humor and nonviolence, specifically the use of carnival events as a form of nonviolent resistance and reconciliation during Serbia’s Otpor! “Bulldozer Revolution.” Although there are several types of nonviolent humor, carnival events are considered a reconciliatory form of nonviolent resistance that simultaneously promotes a friendly atmosphere, serves to delegitimize the authorities, and encourages dissent from all sides of the struggle.
