We invite applications from utopian scholars and creatives to participate in a one-day workshop aimed at regional networking around the important but understudied relationship between utopia and ecology.
The workshop hopes to strengthen the network of utopian scholars and creatives based in the German-speaking territories and neighbouring areas of Central and Northern Europe, loosely defined. Participants need to have worked on utopia but not on the workshop theme. Rather, the workshop offers a space for the collaborative exploration of utopias and ecologies in participants’ existing projects—including but not limited to ecology in utopian narratives, theory, and ethics as well as utopian thinking in environmentalism, sustainable development, or socio-ecological innovation. Visit the website to learn more about the workshop concept and programme.
Notwithstanding the regional focus, we welcome applications from scholars and creatives based elsewhere in Europe and beyond, especially if they have previously engaged with ecotopianism. The workshop language will be English.
To apply, submit a 300 to 500-word statement and a 50 to 100-word biography by 15 October 2018. In the statement, outline your relevant work, how it is embedded in utopian studies or practice, and how it might connect to the workshop theme. Statements and biographies will be circulated among participants. Feel free to add other relevant information or suggestions on the contents and design of the workshop.
Limited financial aid towards travel and accomodation is available. There is no workshop fee. To apply for financial aid, include a request outlining your need and funding situation.
Successful applicants will be notified by 26 October 2018. Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis.
Please send applications and any enquiries to Philipp P. Thapa at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The workshop is organised by the Utopian Studies Society (Europe) with funding from the Department of Ethics, Theory, and History of the Life Sciences at the University of Greifswald.
