“Strengthening our Relations: Reconciliation Through Indigenous Youth Leadership” is a conference that will take place at Selkirk College in Castlegar on September 22-23, 2016. The two day conference will be hosted by Aboriginal youth and is open to youth participants of all cultural backgrounds. It will accommodate as many as 70 youth, and provide workshops that explore leadership skills, creative expression, traditional knowledge, and contemporary indigenous issues including approaches to reconciliation efforts. The keynote speaker for this conference will be Wab Kinew, and this conference will run concurrently with the International Peace and Justice Conference hosted by Selkirk College and the Mir Centre in Nelson. This conference will help empower indigenous youth throughout the region to take on leadership roles and become presenters and hosts of this conference. Creating space for indigenous youth voice to take the stage, to develop leadership skills will provide learning opportunities for all youth. Participants will be able to explore the meaning of reconciliation and collectively envision ways of moving forward to deeper understandings and impacts of colonization on the indigenous population in Canada. This will be done in a well-supported environment with Elders who will encourage and support all of the conference attendees and workshops.
