Visa and Travel Information
Citizens of the United States do not require a visa to enter Canada. However, they do require a valid passport. We strongly advise that you check the Citizen and Immigration Canada website for additional information regarding visa-exempt travelers.
Those who are not citizens of the United States - including high school, undergraduate, and graduate students studying in the United States or those working without US citizenship or a Green Card - may require a visa to travel to Canada. Please refer to the
list of countries whose citizens require a visa provided by Citizen and Immigration Canada.
If you do require a visa, information on the application process, fees, and processing time can be accessed on the Citizen and Immigration Canada website.
Citizens of the United States who have been involved in political activities that have resulted in being detained or those who have been arrested for any reason need to be prepared for questioning while crossing the border (this is of course true for Canadians traveling to and from the United States as well). We encourage you to clarify your record if you are not sure of your status. If you have *ever* been arrested, check that your National Crime Information Center (NCIC) record is accurate, and check with the Canadian embassy or consulate to see if your record might render you inadmissible to Canada. If there's any doubt, apply for a visa in advance to avoid summary denial of admission. It's possible in some circumstances to obtain a visa, a one-time waiver of inadmissibility, or a permanent "certificate of rehabilitation." For any of these things, you need to start the process ASAP - they can take months to process.
Citizens of the United States can request their NCIC information from the FBI. The link is here.
Canadian citizens who are interested in this can find similar information from the RCMP who administer a Certified Criminal Record Check. This might be useful for travel back and forth across the border.

Winnipeg is accessible by airplane, train, and bus. The Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is a small airport but is a frequented stop for major airlines like Air Canada, United, WestJet, and Northwest. It is also the location of a Greyhound Bus Terminal for those arriving to Winnipeg by bus.
Taxi cabs are available outside of the airport terminal -- it will cost less than twenty dollars Canadian to ride from the airport to downtown. Another option is city transit service which is available directly from the airport to downtown for a cost of $2.35 per person.
For those wanting to rent vehicles, car rental companies like Hertz, Enterprise, and Budget are located at the airport as well. A VIA Rail Canada station is situated in downtown Winnipeg. A taxi cab from the station to downtown hotels and the conference site will cost less than ten dollars Canadian.
Another option for travel is for conference participants to fly into Grand Forks International Airport, North Dakota. From there conference attendees can rent a vehicle to drive the 2.5 hours north to Winnipeg. With this route, you will cross into Canada at the Emerson border crossing station. This option might be particularly attractive to those who can coordinate and travel in a group to share car rental costs.
Please contact Caitlin Eliasson at pjsainfo@uwinnipeg.ca if you require any further assistance.
Please note that conference rates generally apply to the nights of September 30th, October 1st, and October 2nd, 2010. Rates are in Canadian dollars and are subject to applicable taxes. We advise that you book your room as far in advance as possible to better ensure that you receive the hotel space and rate of your choosing. Also, please be sure to indicate your affiliation with the Peace and Justice Studies Association Conference when booking.
